High Flow System for refinery in Singapore

How do you guarantee a safe environment when expanding a refinery with three tanks for additional storage? An extremely important step in the development phase is to investigate whether the existing extinguishing system offers sufficient capacity when it is extended. This did not appear to be the case with this customer. That is why we need to develop an extinguishing system with sufficient capacity to, even with this great expansion, provide absolute security. This customized system provides an extinguishing capacity of 90,000 l.p.m. with a pressure of 15 bar.

Analysis and advice

High flow systems are tailor-made. Therefore, we start with our professionals at the beginning: the preparation. What is the request of the client? What is the business demand? What expectations do they have? What does the location and current extinguishing system look like? With us, you are always assured of sound and honest advice, because we do not take risks with firefighting.

Design

During the design phase, the results and conclusions of the analysis and the advice process were translated into the technical solution. For our customer, the deployment time was essential, therefore, we designed a sophisticated logistics system to ensure that the customer is able to easily meet the deployment time with the available crew.

What capacity is required?

To extinguish a tank fire, it is important that the flow and pressure is high enough to bridge the required distance. During the analysis, the pressure required in this situation has been thoroughly investigated. This is crucial in creating an effective extinguishing system. To achieve the required capacity, the system for this specific customer consists of three sub booster pumps, three mobile foam proportioning systems, approximately ten kilometers of 12" hoses (divided over four mobile hose containers), and two monitor trailers.

Hose deployment plan

A hose deployment plan is a standard part of our system. In case of emergency, this plan provides tools to the firefighters and they know exactly where the fire hoses should be rolled out. In addition, at the time of a tank fire, we take into account the possible wind directions. In this particular situation, two dominant directions of wind were relevant. This is important for the placement of the monitors and fire hoses. The results of this are included in the hose deployment plan.

Realization & Test cycle

The realization of the total journey has lasted ten months. During the realization phase, we actively work with the engineers of this customer. This ensures a proper knowledge transfer, to allow this customer to immediately deploy the system after delivery. The Product Acceptance Test took place in Stellendam (NL). The complete extinguishing system has been tested by us and checked by an objective third party to ensure that the tailor-made system meets the specifications and requirements of the customer. For example, these tests consist of pressure and flow tests, to ensure that the system does what it was designed for.

Commissioning

After testing, the components were packaged and shipped to the destination location, in this case Singapore, and the Site Acceptance Test took place. At the transfer, the customer's firemen were trained to use the system. In the process, the customer is also trained to perform primary maintenance. This allows the customer to control their own operational availability. At DNM, we always go for total care and provide absolute security for every situation
